Taj – New Owners, New Ideals
The Ashland, Oregon Food Scene has long been among the most diverse in the Pacific Northwest, cheerfully accommodating dietary lifestyles from vegetarian and vegan to gluten-free, paleo and outright meat-centric. In support of our local farm industries, many of Ashland’s most respected eateries have committed to using only locally sourced ingredients, and by popular demand a good percentage are now refusing to allow genetically modified foods cross their kitchen’s thresholds. The latest establishment to offer an entirely non-GMO-laced menu is an Ashland icon, Taj Indian Restaurant on Water Street.
Taj’s new owners, the sister / brother duo of Lynn and Hani Hajje, were indeed drawn to Ashland in no small part by our community’s insistence on quality food options. And they’ve managed to retain the authenticity of the menu while upgrading to the use of the healthy, local, natural products Ashlanders have come to expect.
You’ll find Taj in their brick-and-mortar location at 31 Water Street, but you’ll also notice their distinct menu items cropping up at parties around the valley due to their burgeoning catering activity, or sponsoring local events (the AIFF Awards Ceremony, for instance, or the April 18thauction to benefit the Siskiyou School). You’ll also be able to sample their fare at the upcoming Taste of Ashland (April 26 & 26, at the Push Art Gallery).
There is entertainment (Belly dancing!) every Thursday night at Taj, and always something special on First Friday (May 1 is a dinner show with special guest Zahara). All events are posted on their Facebook page.
